My first book was Sartre: A Guide for the Perplexed, a re-write of my PhD thesis.
Years of research finally led to The Sartre Dictionary, an A-Z of Sartre’s ideas,
works and influences. The hardest thing I’ve ever done, but very satisfying. Next
came Sartre and Fiction, an introduction to Sartre’s stories, novels and plays.
Suddenly it struck me that a short, self-help book called How to Be an
Existentialist would be a great idea. I wrote it in just a few months and it’s a
huge hit. Time to diversify away from Sartre and existentialism. Why not draw on
years of teaching philosophy to beginners? So I wrote, How to Be a Philosopher. I
then went back to the theme of existentialism with the Existentialist’s Guide to
Death, the Universe and Nothingness. I’ve just finished a new book called
Investigating God, to be published soon.
